Scooter Parking in Nice: Rules, Fines and Smart Habits

In short
In Nice, park your scooter in the two-wheeler bays marked on the ground, never on a pavement, a pedestrian crossing or a bus stop. A two-wheeler left on a pavement risks a 35 euro fine, more if it creates a danger, and being towed. In paid zones, always read the meter and the signs.
A scooter has one big advantage in Nice: you can almost always find a space, where a car would circle the block for ages. You still need to park in the right place, though. Scooter parking in Nice is governed by the French Highway Code, by the city's own rules, and by a few good habits that will save you a fine, a trip to the pound or a nasty surprise when you come back from the beach.
The basic rules for parking a two-wheeler
Everywhere in France, a scooter should park first and foremost in the bays reserved for motorised two-wheelers, shown by markings on the ground or a sign. In Nice, keep your eyes open: they are often at the end of a street, near junctions, or close to squares and shops.
What is forbidden, and fined:
- The pavement. A motorised two-wheeler parked on the pavement (the sidewalk, for American readers) counts as obstructive parking: a 35 euro fine, and the scooter may be towed. If it endangers pedestrians, the penalty can rise to 135 euros with points taken off the licence.
- Pedestrian crossings, bus and tram stops, cycle lanes and reserved spaces (deliveries, disabled drivers, taxis).
- In front of a garage entrance or an emergency exit, even for "just two minutes".
Bicycle stands are not scooter spaces: the racks are reserved for bikes. And a car space, even an empty one, is not necessarily open to two-wheelers. If in doubt, read the sign.
Scooter parking in Nice: paid or free?
On the street, the City of Nice runs paid parking in defined zones, Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 7 pm, with a maximum stay. It is free on Sundays and public holidays. According to the parking page on nice.fr, checked in October 2026, the first two consecutive hours are free each day provided you take a ticket, and you pay at the meter or with the PayByPhone app.
These rules are written mainly with cars in mind, and the city does not spell out the case of scooters on that page. Our advice is simple: use the dedicated two-wheeler bays whenever you can, and if you park in a standard paid space, read the meter and the zone sign to see whether two-wheelers are concerned. The city also announced in spring 2026 that many extra two-wheeler spaces would be created, so the map is changing: trust the signs on the spot rather than an app or a memory from last year.

Where to park, area by area
Old Nice and the Cours Saleya
The heart of Vieux-Nice is largely pedestrian, and its narrow lanes are not made for two-wheelers. Park in the two-wheeler bays around its edges, then walk in: it is more pleasant, and it is the best way to discover the Cours Saleya market, the little squares and the ochre facades.
The Promenade des Anglais and the beaches
Along the seafront, never park on the cycle path or on the pedestrian area of the Promenade. Look for two-wheeler bays in the side streets, on the city side. In summer, avoid spaces in full sun: the seat gets scorching, and so does a helmet left on it.
Port Lympia
Around the harbour, spaces are in demand at restaurant times. Arrive a little early in the evening, or park a bit further away and finish on foot along the quays.
Public car parks
Some of Nice's underground car parks have a two-wheeler area: it is the safest option for a night or a long absence. Conditions and prices vary by operator, so check at the entrance.
The airport
If you are dropping someone off at Nice Côte d'Azur airport, note that two-wheelers are not allowed to stop in the drop-off zones or park in the car parks. The airport has a dedicated motorbike car park: check its conditions on the official airport website before you go.
Locks and good habits
- Always use the lock. The one we provide is a high-end model: use it at every stop, even a short one, attaching it to a fixed point where possible.
- Lock the steering as well as using the lock. It takes two seconds.
- Leave nothing on the scooter: no helmet hanging from it, no bag on the seat, no documents in the trunk overnight.
- Look for flat, firm ground for the centre stand. On sand, grass or tarmac softened by the heat, it can sink.
- Think about leaving: park so you can ride off forwards, without manoeuvring between cars.
- At night, choose a well-lit, busy street or a supervised car park.

Parking outside Nice
In Villefranche, Beaulieu or Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the old centres are narrow and two-wheeler spaces fill up fast in season: park at the edge of the village and carry on on foot. In Èze, the car parks are at the foot of the hilltop village, which you then explore on foot. Monaco has its own parking rules, and riding there on a rental scooter requires MatMonScoot's prior written authorisation: ask for it when you book.
