Where to Stay in Nice: A Neighbourhood Guide for First-Timers and Return Visitors

In short

For a first visit, stay in the Old Town (Vieux-Nice) or the Carré d'Or near the Promenade des Anglais: beach, restaurants and sights are all walkable. Choose the Port for local character, Libération for value, and Cimiez or Mont Boron for peace and views, ideally with a scooter to get down to the sea.

Nice is compact, but its neighbourhoods feel like different towns. A few streets separate the lively lanes of the Old Town from the silent villas of Mont Boron. So where should you stay in Nice? It depends on your trip: beach on your doorstep, late dinners on a terrace, a balcony with a sea view or everyday life like a local. Here is our honest tour of the main areas, who each one suits, and how you get around from there.

Old Town (Vieux-Nice): best for a first visit

Narrow lanes, ochre façades, washing hanging between windows and the smell of socca, the local chickpea pancake: the Old Town is Nice at its most picturesque. The Cours Saleya flower market, the beach and Castle Hill are all a few minutes' walk away.

Who it suits: first-timers, food lovers and anyone who enjoys a late evening out. Worth knowing: it is lively, sometimes noisy until late, and many old buildings have stairs and no lift. Most lanes are pedestrian, so you live on foot here and park a scooter in the two-wheeler bays on the surrounding main streets.

Promenade des Anglais and Carré d'Or: the postcard

Between the Promenade des Anglais and the city centre, the Carré d'Or (the "golden square") gathers Belle Époque buildings, boutiques and restaurants. You walk to the beach in minutes and reach Place Masséna on foot, and a sea-view balcony is part of the dream.

Who it suits: travellers who want everything within walking distance, beach included, and a comfortable stay. Worth knowing: it is one of the most sought-after areas, so book early for summer and big events. Walking and the tram cover the city; a scooter opens up Villefranche, Cap Ferrat and the beaches beyond.

The Port: local character with a view of the boats

Around Port Lympia, pastel façades frame fishing boats and yachts. The surrounding streets are full of cafés, wine bars and antique shops, with a more local mood than the centre. The tram stops right at the port and runs through the centre to the airport.

Who it suits: couples, return visitors, anyone who likes a neighbourhood with life but fewer crowds than the Old Town. Scooter bonus: the port is the perfect starting point for the coast road to Villefranche and Cap Ferrat, an easy ride even on a 50cc like the Riviera 50.

Cimiez: the quiet hill

Up on the hill, Cimiez is all wide avenues lined with grand Belle Époque residences, gardens and olive trees. It is home to Roman ruins, the Matisse Museum and a monastery with lovely gardens, and every Sunday in May it hosts the traditional Fêtes des Mai.

Who it suits: families, art lovers and anyone after a calm base. Worth knowing: the sea is at the bottom of the hill, a bus ride or a long walk down (and back up). This is exactly where a scooter changes your holiday: about ten minutes to the beach, no timetable.

Libération: live like a local

North of the centre, around the old Gare du Sud station and its busy market, Libération is where people from Nice actually live and shop. Greengrocers, bakeries and neighbourhood terraces set the tone, and prices are often gentler than on the seafront.

Who it suits: travellers on a budget, long stays and digital nomads who want the real thing. Getting around: tram line 1 runs down to Jean Médecin, Place Masséna and the Old Town. By scooter, the sea is a short ride away.

Mont Boron: the view above everything

East of the port, Mont Boron is the green hill between Nice and Villefranche. Villas hidden among the pines, a forest park crossed by footpaths and the old Mont Alban fort on top make it the neighbourhood of panoramas, from the Baie des Anges to Cap Ferrat.

Who it suits: nature lovers, romantic getaways, anyone who values silence. Worth knowing: roads are winding and shops are few, so without wheels every outing becomes an expedition. With a scooter, the hill becomes an asset: the port in a few minutes, Villefranche just over the other side. For the steepest climbs with a passenger, the 125cc is the comfortable choice.

Fabron and the west: residential and practical

To the west, the Fabron hills and the areas near the airport end of the Promenade offer a residential setting, often more space and sometimes a garden or a pool. You are further from the action, but close to the airport and the main roads.

Who it suits: families renting a house, late arrivals and early departures. Getting around: tram line 2 serves the west on its way to the airport, buses climb the hills, and a scooter takes you into the centre without hunting for car parking.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Nice for a first visit?

The Old Town and the Carré d'Or near the Promenade des Anglais are the easiest choices: the beach, restaurants and main sights are all within walking distance, with the tram close by for longer trips.

Where should I stay in Nice without a car?

The Old Town, Carré d'Or, Port and Libération all work perfectly without a car thanks to walking and the tram. For Cimiez, Mont Boron or the western hills, a scooter is the most flexible way to get around.

Is the Old Town of Nice noisy at night?

It can be, especially in summer and at weekends, as it is the heart of the restaurant and bar scene. Light sleepers should ask for a room facing a courtyard, or choose a quieter area such as Cimiez or Mont Boron.

Do you deliver scooters to every neighbourhood in Nice?

Yes. Delivery is free anywhere in Nice, to your hotel, Airbnb or a meeting point, by appointment. For nearby towns, ask us when you book.
