In short

Vespa® is a registered trademark of Piaggio & C. S.p.A. MatMonScoot is not affiliated with it and does not rent Vespa scooters. We rent 50cc and 125cc retro scooters with a 1960s Italian look, from 35 euros a day, delivered in Nice by appointment. Want a genuine Vespa? Choose a renter that names the brand and model.

Type "Vespa rental Nice" into a search engine and you will find a mix of offers, photos and promises. It is no surprise: for many of us, the image of a rounded Italian scooter gliding along the Mediterranean is the very picture of a Riviera holiday. But it is worth being precise about words, because they describe different things. Here is an honest guide, from a company that rents retro scooters and wants you to choose with full knowledge.

Vespa is a brand, not a style

Vespa® is a registered trademark of Piaggio & C. S.p.A., the Italian manufacturer that has built Vespa scooters since the 1940s. Only scooters made by Piaggio under that name are Vespas.

Over the decades, the shape of those early Italian scooters, with their curved bodywork, front shield and small wheels, became an icon in its own right. Many manufacturers today build scooters inspired by that 1950s and 1960s look. These are usually called retro, vintage-style or classic scooters.

So let us be clear about ourselves: MatMonScoot is not affiliated with Piaggio or the Vespa brand, and we do not rent Vespa scooters. We rent retro scooters with a 1960s Italian look. When we use the phrase "Vespa-style", it is only to describe an aesthetic, never a product.

What a retro scooter really is

A retro scooter is a modern scooter with classic design cues: rounded lines, chrome details, a long two-seat saddle, soft colours and that unmistakable silhouette. It is registered, insured and ridden exactly like any other scooter of the same engine size.

Our fleet has three models, each with its own personality:

  • Dolce 50: 50cc, in a vivid red, the classic Riviera postcard.
  • Riviera 50: 50cc, two-tone black and white with a round chrome headlight and an under-seat trunk, made for two.
  • Milano 125: 125cc, black with an Italian tricolour stripe and chrome, made for the corniches, Èze and Monaco.

Why the retro look still works on the Riviera

The postwar decades turned the small Italian scooter into a symbol of freedom: affordable, elegant and light enough to slip through narrow streets down to the sea. The Riviera of that era, with its striped parasols, open-top cars and long lunches by the water, still shapes how many of us imagine a holiday here.

A retro scooter taps into that memory without asking you to give up modern practicality. You get the curves, the chrome and the colours, on a machine that is registered, insured and backed by 7-day assistance if anything goes wrong. For a first ride on unfamiliar roads, that peace of mind matters as much as the look.

Comparing rentals: what really matters

Whatever the brand, the riding experience on the Riviera is shaped by a few concrete factors. Here is what we suggest you compare, wherever you rent.

Engine size and feel

This matters more than the logo. A 50cc is limited to 45 km/h: relaxed and easy, ideal for Nice, Villefranche or Cap Ferrat. A 125cc has the power for the climbs of the Grande and Moyenne Corniche and for faster roads. Choose based on your route, not just the look.

Licence

The rules depend on engine size, not brand. In France, a car licence generally covers a 50cc, while a 125cc usually requires a motorcycle category for visitors. Our guide licence rules for UK, US and EU visitors explains the details.

Price and what is included

Compare the full picture: daily price, degressive rates for longer rentals, helmets, gloves, lock, insurance, assistance and deposit. We cannot speak for other companies, so we will simply state our own terms. Our 50cc scooters start at 35 euros a day and our 125cc at 60 euros a day, with lower rates for longer stays. Two approved helmets, gloves, a high-end lock, third-party insurance and 7-day assistance are included. Full details are on our prices page.

Delivery and convenience

Some rentals require you to collect the scooter at a shop. We bring yours to your hotel, Airbnb or a meeting point in Nice and the surrounding area, by appointment. See our delivery service.

Our honest advice

If riding a genuine Vespa is what matters to you, that is a perfectly good reason to choose your rental. In that case, look for a company that clearly states the brand and model of its scooters in writing, and check the booking details before you pay.

If what you are after is the feeling, the look and the slow, sunlit pleasure of a 1960s-inspired scooter on the Promenade des Anglais, then a retro scooter delivers exactly that. Ours were chosen for their style, their comfort and their ease of riding on the Riviera's roads.

Where a retro scooter feels most at home

  • The Promenade des Anglais at golden hour, past the blue chairs and the Belle Époque facades.
  • The old town and Port Lympia, for coffee stops and ochre streets.
  • The Basse Corniche towards Villefranche and Beaulieu, the sea always on your right.
  • Monaco, on a 125cc and with our prior written authorisation. Follow our Nice to Monaco route.

The essence of the Riviera: a retro scooter, the sea and time to spare

In the end, the Dolce Vita is not a trademark. It is a way of travelling: slowly, with style, and with the sea in view. That part, we are happy to provide.
